From the north:
Take Highway 177 south at Strong City. Go through Cottonwood Falls, Bazaar and Matfield Green (about 18 miles ). When taking the turnpike from the north (Emporia, Topeka, KC, etc.), the easiest way to get here is to go to the Cassoday (Exit #92), then follow the directions below from the south.
Go through Matfield Green. Leaving town on the south, there is a hill and the road curves to the right. Make a left turn about in the middle of the curve. This is 55 Road. Watch the solid yellow line down the center of the road and where it ends in the curve, there's the left turn. There's a white house with brown shutters on the SE corner of the corner (in front of you to the left). There's a pole barn (4 poles with a roof that slides up and down them) on the SW side of the road (in front of you to the right). The railroad track is above the road to the right on the hill. The street sign for 55 Road is in the middle of the "Y at the intersection." If you get to mile marker #30, you’ve gone too far.
After making the turn off the highway, the Matfield Green Cemetery is directly east in front of you about 2 blocks (that's in city measurements!) on 55 Road after making this turn.
Hang on a minute while I get those coming from the south to the cemetery....
From the south:
From the turnpike, take exit #92 at Cassoday. Take Highway 177 north (right). The sign at 177 will say Manhattan. It is possible to get to Cassoday from the south (go north on Highway 177 from El Dorado) and west (take First Street extension going east out of Newton).
On 177, watch for mile marker #30 south of Matfield Green. Shortly after marker 30, there are 2 white "Speed Limit 40 mph" signs and one yellow left curve sign. The turn off the highway to the right (east) and towards the cemetery is soon after these signs at 55 Road. It is advisable to start slowing down at these speed limit signs. The turn onto the cemetery road is midway on a curve to the left. On the left side of the road is a pole hay barn. The top moves up and down on poles - it sits on the left at just about the right turn. There's a white house with brown shutters on the right at the corner. Turn to the right off 177 on 55 Road and head toward the Matfield Green cemetery.
If this turn off is missed, Matfield Green comes up real quick. The "Hitchin’ Post", the local bar and grill, is on the right. Just turn around and head back toward the turn in the road.
Everybody:
There is a "T" at the cemetery. Turn right (south) onto R Road and follow the blacktop to the retreat center. The center is 3.8 miles from the cemetery. Watch for deer! A bridge crosses over the turnpike. At about 3.7 miles from the cemetery, the road name changes to Thurman Creek Road. There is another bridge about the size of the turnpike bridge just beyond this street sign (there are several smaller bridges before the bigger one near the retreat center). There is a set of cattle pens just before the gravel driveway on the left. There is a large yellow mailbox on the right (south) side of the road marked "Tallgrass Retreat Center Box 24" and on the left side at the gravel driveway is a large, upright limestone rock with "The Homestead" engraved on it. The Main House is on the left (north) at the driveway. It's a big 2-story gray house. The house has a big round red Coca Cola sign on the front porch. If it’s after dark, there we be lots of lights on. There is parking in front of the Bunkhouse (the other gray building), to the left (west) of the drive as well as north of the big oak tree.
If you get to the gravel road, you've gone too far.
Any neighbor can give directions to Jane Koger's Main House (not the straw bale house), if you have any trouble. The phone number here is 620-753-3465.
